[link]

If this help your drawing, I would be happy! X)

NOTE :
Recently, I noticed somethings, so I added description.
But it's really rough.. if you had some question, feel free to ask me in this comment.

There are some people who can't have "Lumi and Shade" layer in their SAI. Make sure of its version (Newest version is 1.1.0 ( April 2012 ).
If you had an old version, you can download newest version from here [link] ( SAI official site )

I'm actually not sure if I have this 'Lumi and Shade' (where can you find it on SAI?). But I do have a layer style called 'Lumiosity'. Could that be the same? I think it DOES the same, but I'm not sure.

Can this method work for full detail pictures not sketches and simple like this? Your art looks great as thumbnail but when u watch them close and full view then they feel sketchy to me. (nothing wrong with that though)
please respond, i don't have the time to test it myself right now really busy with commissions projects and school so it might take me some months before i try something like this

I think you can also draw detail pictures by this way. In my case, I prefer to think about colors than think about details. So, if you wanna draw detail pictures by this way, you have to draw details GRAY SCALE picture, and then when you put some colors above the layer which is drawn gray scale picture, you can adjust picture's color as you want.
And make sure to choose the brush for suitable for drawing details. My brush I always use is really rough brush as you can see. So you also have to think which brush you should choose.

ok thank you - i just think this is really helpful cause it seems faster
when i paint i paint directly in color and it takes time or i have to think of them before hand
and yes i have my brushes that i work with so no problem with that i just wanted to know that this can be used even for detailed pics
anyway i am gonna try this when i have time
thanks for responding
keep it up

I think It just has Luminosity, I think it may be similar to Lumi and shade, let me try this out and see if it works just as good. if not, oh well, I could probably find a download that has Lumi and shade and get that into this sai.

it seems my SAI is old too, because I don't have the lumi and shade setting at all. Is there any way to get it, or just download it somehow by searching lumi and shade download for SAI? or do I need to try and obtain a entirely new version to get lumi and shade?

So, when using the Gamut Mask, you just pick any colors you like inside the triangle?

At first, I picked some colors from Gamut Mask (inside the triangle) when I put colors on Lumi and Shade layer, and put those on color pallet. You can choose any color from those pallet.

I wanted to let you know this is a really helpful tutorial (though I was confused about the Gamut thing... I thought it was something inside SAI. But then I realized you just pasted it from the website, haha!). My first results were TERRIBLE, but it was because I am not very good with SAI yet, hahaha, so it was also very educational. From your super example and my super-bad attempt, it was easy to see where I made some mistakes.

Also I'm not sure if it's true for everyone, but I also don't have a "Lumi and Shade" layer--however I do have a "Luminosity" layer that I think is the same thing (maybe just a different translation?). It seems to do the same thing, anyway.

Hmm, I guess that you don't have those layer because your SAI's version is old.. My version is 1.1.0, and I can see that number on [others] -- [version info].
Could you check that number? And if your version is old, I suggest you updating your version from SAI's official site.

Actually, I am about 99% sure you are correct. A friend of mine told me she had a Luminosity layer AND the Lumi/Shade layer, and after you telling me this, I'm guessing mine is definitely missing something. I'll be updating it soon for sure (now I have to be patient because I'm not at home for five days!)

one question though, what did you use to draw and paint this ,the water tool or the brush tool, and also, do you prefer some modes(spread, middel flat, etc.)
